Plan A Picnic At Smith Mountain Lake

There is no better place for a picnic than Smith Mountain Lake. And the ideas for picnic food are as many an there are stars in the sky. Everyone has their own ideas of what sounds like fun food, and mine are to keep it light. I want something tasty and filling but light and refreshing. Here are some recipe ideas for packing a picnic basket.

FROSTED WATERMELON/CANTELOUPE

What You Need:

  • 1/4 cup raw sugar or evaporated cane juice
  • 1/4 cup organic lime juice (from 1 1/2 limes)
  • 2 teaspoons finely grated organic lime peel
  • 1 medium cantaloupe  cut into small wedges
  • 1 large piece de-seeded watermelon – aprox. 5lbs. cut into small wedges

Beat raw sugar and 1/4 cup hot water till it dissolves.  Then stir in lime juice and grated peel. Cover and refrigerate until cool and store in frig for up to 3 days. Also store melons in frig at least 24hrs. prior to picnic (you may cut into slices ahead of time if desired).

As close to the time of your picnic as possible, drizzle the liquid portion over melon slices and put in freezer for a half hour.  Put in cooler with ice when packing for picnic.

Jane Seymour To Speak In Roanoke

The Smith Mountain Lake movie, “Lake Effects” is getting very close to completion and everyone is anxious to see the finished results. In the meantime many of us have been privileged to enjoy the company of several popular actors and actresses during the filming at the lake. On May 12th there will be another opportunity to see and hear perhaps the most famous of those playing in “Lake Effects”, Jane Seymour.

The Roanoke Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau has limited seating for its annual meeting and luncheon on May 12th so if you are interested you should hurry. It is an event many will be willing to pay the $45 per ticket in order to attend as it will be featuring a speech by actress Jane Seymour, best known for her role as Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.

The luncheon will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center on May 12, 2011. For more information, contact Heidi Mowry at 342-6025, ext. 116, or hmowry@visitroanokeva.com.

Water Levels at SML

Sponsored by http://www.smithmountainlakenews.com/

Many people who visit Smith Mountain Lake are surprised that the water levels do not fluctuate much. Other man-made lakes, controlled by power companies, see significant, regular fluctuations. Lake Norman, in North Carolina, fluctuates so much that, in some cases, docks have to be built on a pivoting mechanism more than 100 ft. from shore. Homeowners there say they are often looking at a mud bowl in the winter rather than a beautiful lake. The long piers and docks are sometimes sitting in mud, and their boats are sitting in storage.

I remember back in the winter of 2007, many of us were seeing pictures in the news of Lake Lanier, near Atlanta, which had become a virtual dried up mud hole with grass growing hundreds of feet out from the normal shoreline. There were reports that Atlanta would lose its water supply if rain didn’t come soon. Five million people held their breath to see what would happen.

Due in part to the outstanding design of the Smith Mountain Lake hydroelectric system, we enjoy relatively stable water levels. In fact, most boathouses are built close to shore and don’t require a swivel mechanism for fluctuating lake levels. To my knowledge, water levels have never dropped to a level in which the enjoyment and functionality of the lake is significantly impacted for most people.
Note that our neighbor, Leesville Lake, offers properties at significantly lower prices than Smith Mountain Lake. Leesville Lake, however, experiences fluctuation in water levels – up to six feet above or below normal lake level. If you want to save money and don’t mind this fluctuation, Leesville Lake is a pretty place to live.

If you are interested in property at Smith Mountain Lake or Leesville Lake we would be happy to help you find the perfect match.
